Frequently
Asked
Questions
What do I expect at my first appointment?
The Physiotherapist will firstly ask you about your medical history and medication you take. Bring your prescription with you for ease, if appropriate. They will then ask you about the problem you are experiencing to understand the situation well. They will then assess the area of the body you are having problems with. Often, joints above the problem or below will be assessed eg the spine will be assessed if hip or knee pain. By the end of the session they will be able to give you a diagnosis and a start of a treatment plan.
What do I expect at treatment sessions?
Treatment may consist of soft tissue techniques such as massage, trigger point and muscle energy techniques. Mobilisations or manipulations may be part of treatment. Acupuncture can be discussed and be part of treatment. The treatment will always be supported by rehab exercises that will need to be continued between treatments to achieve a good outcome. All treatments will be fully discussed with you before they are started.
How should I dress?
The Physiotherapist will want to see clearly the area of the problem. This may require you to undress to your underwear or wear a vest top or shorts depending on upper or lower limb problems.
Will any treatments hurt?
Some techniques may cause some soreness or discomfort at the time of treatment or residual post treatment. However, the therapist will explain this as part of the treatment plan.
How will I know what exercises to do at home?
Your personalised exercise programme will be sent to you in various formats so you can refer to the exercises at any point in time. You will not have to remember them.
How frequent are the treatments?
This depends on the problem. A more recent onset of the problem (acute), may need some weekly sessions. A longer term (chronic) problem will have the treatments more spread out over time. This will be discussed at your first appointment.
How many sessions of treatment will I need?
This again, depends on the problem. Acute problems are more likely to settle quicker, within 6 sessions, More chronic problems may need between 6-8 sessions.
How do I pay?
Payment is on the day. It can be cash, cheque or bank transfer. Details are in the email confirmation when the appointment is made.
How do I access the practice?
